In their new production, Luminance, the world-renowned Kodo ensemble explores the transformative power of rhythm, shifting the stage from the stark beauty of monochrome into a world of vivid, pulsing color. Directed by Yuki Hirata, this performance marks a pivotal milestone in Kodo’s 45-year history, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Maki Ishii’s avant-garde masterpiece, Monochrome, while debuting new works inspired by the ensemble's global travels.
The journey begins in darkness with the haunting call of flutes before erupting into a "sonic explosion" of taiko. From the earth-shaking thunder of the massive O-daiko to the athletic, synchronized precision of Yatai-bayashi, Luminance is more than a concert—it is a beacon of hope. By blending decades of tradition with contemporary choreography and light-driven staging, Kodo invites the audience to witness the "heartbeat" of Japan as it radiates outward to connect us all.
