Pearl & The Oysters — the duo of Juliette Pearl Davis (Juju) and Joachim Polack (Jojo) — formed a decade ago in Paris before eventually settling in Los Angeles. Like their adopted city, their music balances brightness and unease: sun-drenched on the surface, yet threaded with deeper currents beneath. Their distinctive blend of lounge pop draws from '70s piano rock, Brazilian music, exotica, and Japanese city pop, exploring how to navigate uncertainty, anxiety, and modern life with curiosity and grace.
The seeds of Monkey Mind were planted in January 2025, as Los Angeles faced devastating wildfires and the country braced for Donald Trump's second inauguration. After a sleepless night overwhelmed by the moment, Juju awoke to find that Jojo had written her a song: “Wide Awake,” a quiet gesture of comfort amid the chaos. That song became the catalyst for the album.
Named after the Buddhist concept of a restless, ever-chattering consciousness, Monkey Mind traces the arc of a single day—from stillness and clarity to overstimulation, rumination, and, ultimately, release. Produced by Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, The Lemon Twigs, Father John Misty), the album follows thoughts as they accelerate, loop, and gradually settle.
Rather than disappearing into their usual meticulous process, Juju and Jojo embraced immediacy, writing their sixth album in just a few weeks. “We felt a need to tap into a certain urgency and honesty,” they explain, “in response to a culture increasingly defined by digital alienation and generative-AI slop.” Working within the framework of a 24-hour cycle, the pair created a record that shifts alongside the mind itself: opening with Randy Newman-inspired piano that's drowsy and serene before moving through the yacht-rock shimmer of “Mandarin Moon,” the kinetic rush of “Shinkansen,” and the nervous, funk-driven energy of “Stratford & 52,” named for the Los Angeles intersection where they first lived.
At its heart, Monkey Mind is also a portrait of Juju and Jojo's enduring creative and romantic partnership, which began in high school and continues to shape every corner of their music. On “A Pocket Symphony,” they reflect on that shared journey, finding stability, humor, and connection amid the noise.
