The harpsichord is a plucked-string keyboard instrument whose keys activate jacks with plectra to sound strings. Widely used in Renaissance and Baroque music, it was largely superseded by the piano in the late 18th century and saw a revival in the 20th century through historically informed performance and new compositions. Numerous historical instruments survive in museums and specialist builders and performers continue to maintain the instrument's repertoire and construction traditions.
